Receivers of radio control systems work with a power supply of 4.8 to 5V. Usually this voltage are made by 4 battery cells. The conected circuits to the receiver (servo motor, electronical switch) have to work with this voltage, too. There are some receivers with an internal voltage regulator to work with higher voltage for power supply, but the connected parts work with 5V. With an external voltage regulator a higher voltage by battery cells are useable for receivers for 5V. If the difference between battery voltage and receiver voltage is very small, a low drop version for the external voltage regulator is more useful.
